Every camera is placed on a plan before anything is mounted

Most camera complaints trace back to design: a lens too wide to identify a face at the door, a parking lot camera blinded by headlights, a loading dock with a blind spot between doors. We start every Northwest Indiana project with a site walk and a written design.

You see the coverage map, the camera list and the recording plan before you approve anything. That is also the document your insurer, landlord or auditor can review.

  • Pixel density planned for identification at entries and overview across lots and docks
  • Glare, headlights, snow and winter light checked for every exterior view
  • Retention set by camera, so storage matches your policy
  • Pole, wall and roof mounts, cable paths and lift needs priced up front

Multi-tenant buildings

Common area, garage and elevator lobby coverage that property managers can share with tenants and security staff, with access by role.

Manufacturing and distribution

Production floors, dock doors, shipping and receiving and restricted rooms for plants, distribution centers and fulfillment buildings in Merrillville, Hammond, Gary and Hobart, plus yard and trailer coverage along I-80/94 and I-65.

Medical groups and clinics

Waiting rooms, entries, medication storage and parking, with privacy zones that keep exam areas out of view.

Schools and public agencies

Entries, hallways, parking lots and public buildings for districts, villages and park districts, with NDAA compliant hardware and purchasing through GSA or cooperative contracts.

Choosing the right camera for each area

One camera model rarely fits a whole site. This is how we usually match cameras to the places Northwest Indiana organizations need to watch.

AreaGoalTypical camera
Main entries and lobbiesIdentify every person who entersFixed dome or bullet with a narrow field of view at face height
Parking lots and garagesSee activity across a wide areaMultisensor or panoramic camera on a pole, roof edge or garage ceiling

Every placement is confirmed in the site design before installation.

Camera and video platforms we install in Northwest Indiana

We choose the platform per site, not per vendor. Many Northwest Indiana buildings already have cameras on the wall, and we keep the ones that still perform.

Analytics, plate recognition and talk down

Modern cameras do more than record. We set up the analytics each site needs and tune them so alerts stay useful instead of noisy.

  • Person and vehicle detection on fence lines, lots and after hours parking
  • Forensic search by object type, color, direction and time
  • License plate recognition at gates, garages and lot entries
  • Horn speakers and live or recorded talk down to warn people off a site
  • Line crossing and loitering alerts sent to a phone or a monitoring center
  • AI added to existing cameras where the hardware supports it

Want help after hours? 24/7 system health and alert monitoring available, plus a 24/7 converged security NOC/SOC. See Axis audio and talk down and Axis radar.

The network and cybersecurity most camera installers skip

Cameras are computers on your network. A camera system with default passwords and open ports is a way into the rest of the business. Because BTI is also an IT and cybersecurity provider, we design camera networks the way your IT team would.

  • Cameras on their own VLAN, separated from office computers
  • Unique credentials, current firmware and no open inbound ports
  • PoE switches and outdoor enclosures sized for the cameras, the heat and future growth
  • Wireless or fiber links to poles, gates and guard shacks where trenching is not practical
  • Health monitoring so a dead camera is found before you need its footage

Need more than cameras? See managed IT in Northwest Indiana and cybersecurity in Northwest Indiana.

Indiana video privacy and project requirements

Decide who may view footage, how long recordings are retained and which areas should not be recorded before installation. Cameras stay out of private areas, and audio recording is disabled by default unless the owner has confirmed the legal basis with counsel.

The scope identifies site access, permitting, lift work and any required local trades. We make no Indiana licensing claim based on an Illinois credential.

Authorized users get individual access, appropriate permissions and secure remote viewing, with the network documented for ongoing support.

How a Northwest Indiana camera project runs

  1. Free site assessment. We walk the building and grounds with you, with day and night conditions in mind.
  2. Site design. Coverage maps, camera list, retention and network plan for your approval.
  3. Written proposal. Every camera, license, mount and labor item listed.
  4. Installation. Crews and lifts from our Downers Grove office install and aim each camera, scheduled around your business hours.
  5. Tuning and training. Analytics, alerts and user access are set up and your team learns search and export.
  6. Support. Health monitoring, repairs and upgrades from the same team.

Financing at 3.99% is available for qualified buyers, subject to credit approval.

Upgrading an older camera system

Many Northwest Indiana buildings still run analog or early IP cameras on an aging recorder. A full rip and replace is rarely needed.

  • Replace the recorder first and keep IP cameras that still meet image and security standards
  • Use encoders to bring working analog cameras onto a new platform during a phased upgrade
  • Reuse existing cable where testing shows it can carry PoE
  • Upgrade entries, lots and docks first, where image quality matters most

Work close to home

BTI has installed Avigilon cameras and Avigilon Alta (formerly Openpath) access control for clients in Downers Grove, a few minutes from our office, and Axis cameras for a Chicagoland Ford dealership.

Case study: Gjovik Ford, Plano, IL

Gjovik Ford wanted "a very high-security camera system" at its new 34,000-square-foot dealership in Plano. BTI delivered integrated video surveillance with door and gate access control that monitors vehicles as they enter and exit and documents existing or new damage. LPR video retrieval lets service writers pull footage by license plate. The dealership has reduced damage claims by 75%.

"The smart cameras allow us to retrieve video by license plates to instantly show customers their before and after car condition which builds trust and understanding between our service writers and clients."
Todd O'Reilly, Co-Owner and General Manager, Gjovik Ford

Northwest Indiana cities we serve

Most issues start with remote diagnosis. Engineers, crews and replacement equipment travel from our Downers Grove, Illinois office for scheduled on site days, with travel and site access agreed before work begins.

Hammond, East Chicago and Gary: industrial and freight sites

Plants, warehouses, truck yards and supplier buildings around I-80/94 and the lakefront need reliable networks, dock and perimeter video and controlled entry. These cities are about 32 to 39 straight-line miles from Downers Grove.

  • Hammond
  • East Chicago
  • Gary

Munster, Highland, Dyer and Schererville

Professional offices, medical groups and commercial sites along US 30 and US 41 need secure Wi-Fi, Microsoft 365, staff access and parking coverage. On site engineering is scheduled from our Illinois office.

  • Munster
  • Highland
  • Dyer
  • Schererville

Merrillville, Crown Point and Hobart

Distribution, light industrial and office buildings along the I-65 corridor need warehouse connectivity, support across shifts and a standard for cameras and doors as sites expand.

  • Merrillville
  • Crown Point
  • Hobart

Portage, Valparaiso and Chesterton

Porter County plants, logistics sites, schools and offices get remote support and planned installation or service days, with travel and site access agreed in the scope.

  • Portage
  • Valparaiso
  • Chesterton

Michigan City and La Porte

Eastern Northwest Indiana sites are farther from our office. We plan service windows, replacement parts and remote access before dispatch rather than imply a nearby branch.

  • Michigan City
  • La Porte

This hub covers Northwest Indiana, including Lake County in Indiana, not Lake County in Illinois. Illinois I-55 sites stay on the Will County hub, and other Chicago-area locations are on the Chicago hub.

Industrial perimeters and yards

Match wide overview cameras with narrower identification views, plan night lighting and use appropriate enclosures for exposed industrial and lakefront conditions.

Docks and gate lanes

In Hammond, Gary and Portage, record deliveries at the dock and capture plates at controlled gate lanes with dedicated cameras rather than relying on a distant overview.

Offices and multi-site portfolios

Use role-based viewing, privacy zones and a documented retention plan for Merrillville, Crown Point and Valparaiso buildings.

Northwest Indiana security cameras: questions we hear

Who installs commercial security camera systems in Northwest Indiana?

BTI Communications Group, LTD. designs and installs commercial camera systems from its Downers Grove office. Call 630-343-1322.

Who installs commercial security cameras in Gary and Hammond?

BTI Communications Group, LTD. designs and installs commercial security camera systems for Gary, Hammond and Merrillville warehouses, plants and offices from our Downers Grove office. We are an Authorized and Certified Axis Gold Partner, have been in business for over 40 years.

How long does a security camera installation take?

Most projects follow a free site assessment, a written coverage design and proposal, then a scheduled install. Install time depends on camera count, cabling paths and lift work, and we plan around your hours so the site stays open.

Can you replace an old DVR or analog camera system?

Yes. We can replace the recorder first, keep working cameras through encoders and phase in IP cameras where image quality matters most.

Does BTI have an office in Northwest Indiana?

No. Our Chicagoland office is in Downers Grove, about 32 miles from Hammond. Crews, lifts and replacement cameras leave from there.

Can you cover large warehouse yards and truck lots?

Yes. Multisensor cameras on poles and roof edges cover wide yards with fewer mounts, plate recognition logs every truck at the gate and analytics flag people or vehicles in the yard after hours.

Is BTI an Axis partner?

Yes. BTI is an Authorized and Certified Axis Gold Partner.

Do you design the system before installation?

Yes. Every commercial camera project starts with a site walk and a coverage design so placement, storage and network load are clear before install.

Can you take over an existing camera system?

Yes. We keep cameras and recorders that still work, replace what does not, and bring viewing and alerts onto a supported platform.

Do cameras work with access control?

Yes. We often pair cameras with access control so a door event opens the matching video clip.

How is a camera project quoted?

After a free site assessment we send a written scope with camera counts, storage and network notes.

Do you support remote viewing?

Yes. Authorized users can view live and recorded video from a browser or phone, with MFA and role based access.

Do you work with schools and public agencies?

Yes. BTI holds GSA contract 47QTCA21D00BA and designs camera systems for districts and public buildings.
