Network Upgrade: Replace Aging Firewalls, Switches and Wi-Fi Without Starting Over

When a firewall reaches end of support or the Wi-Fi cannot keep up, you do not need a whole new network. BTI checks what you have, keeps what still has life in it, and replaces the rest on one plan, tested before your team relies on it.

Value engineer, scope, deliver, commission, then managed support

A network upgrade is a project with a beginning and an end, but your network keeps running long after. BTI handles every stage:

1

Value engineering, at no charge

We look at what you have and what you need, keep equipment that still has life in it, and size new equipment so you do not pay for capacity you will not use.

2

Scoping

A walk-through, an inventory of firewalls, switches and access points with their support dates, an Ekahau Wi-Fi design where coverage matters, and an itemized proposal.

3

Delivery

Equipment configured and tested before it is installed, with cutovers scheduled with you, often after hours.

4

Commissioning

An Ekahau validation survey of the new Wi-Fi, firewall and internet failover tests, VPN and phone tests, and as-built documentation with a current network diagram.

5

Managed support

After the project, BTI can monitor firewalls, switches and Wi-Fi, keep firmware and security licenses current and handle changes. Work with your IT team through co-managed IT (add people through IT staff augmentation), or hand it to BTI through fully managed IT.

Doing all of this as one team means nothing falls between a designer, an installer and a support provider.

Finance 100% of your network upgrade

Firewalls, switches, access points and the labor to install them add up. BTI can arrange 3.99% vendor financing for 100% of the project, including equipment, labor and consulting, for qualified buyers, subject to credit approval. Many bank loans run 10% or more today and ask for far more collateral. Our vendor financing is secured by the new equipment itself.

Signs your network needs an upgrade

  • The firewall, switches or access points are past or near end of support.
  • Wi-Fi drops or slows in conference rooms, warehouses or busy areas.
  • Security subscriptions on the firewall have lapsed or the model no longer gets new firmware.
  • You are adding cameras, phones, access control or access points and the switches are out of PoE power.
  • You have more than one internet line but no automatic failover.
  • No one has a current network diagram or the admin passwords.

Firewall end of life: check your model

Firewalls past end of support stop getting security fixes. Examples from SonicWall's own lifecycle notices:

SonicWall model End of support (SonicWall)
TZ 300 and TZ 300W January 23, 2025
SOHO and SOHO W April 16, 2026
TZ 400, TZ 400W, TZ 600, TZ 600P and NSa 3650 August 1, 2026
SOHO 250 and SOHO 250W October 1, 2026

Sources: SonicWall end of support notice for the TZ 400, TZ 400W, TZ 600, TZ 600P and NSa 3650, and SonicWall product lifecycle tables (https://www.sonicwall.com/support/product-lifecycle-tables), checked October 25, 2026. Check your exact model, because dates differ by model and license.

Replacement options. A current SonicWall model or a Cisco Meraki MX, sized to your internet speed, users and security services. BTI moves your rules, VPNs and VLANs, tests failover, then removes the old unit. For ongoing firewall support see SonicWall support; for Meraki see BTI's Meraki services; for firewall policy and monitoring see network security.

Wi-Fi upgrade

Newer Wi-Fi handles more devices at higher speeds, so a Wi-Fi upgrade often reduces the number of cable drops you need. BTI designs and validates Wi-Fi with Ekahau: a predictive design shows where access points go, and a validation survey after installation confirms coverage and signal strength. See also commercial Wi-Fi.

Switches and PoE

Switches carry everything: PCs, phones, access points, cameras and door controllers. An upgrade is a chance to add PoE power for new devices, separate traffic with VLANs, and add redundancy for the core switch.

Internet and WAN

More than one internet line with automatic failover, SD-WAN between locations, and VPN for remote staff. Phones and video calls get priority so they stay clear when the line is busy.

Upgrade or new installation?

Situation Where to go
Existing network, aging or end-of-life equipment This page
New building, new cabling or a full network build Network installation

What drives the cost

  • Number and type of firewalls, switches and access points.
  • Security subscriptions and support licenses.
  • Wi-Fi design and validation surveys.
  • Any new cabling or PoE needs.
  • After-hours cutover work.

Each item is a separate line in the proposal. BTI can arrange 3.99% vendor financing for 100% of the project, including equipment, labor and consulting, for qualified buyers, subject to credit approval.

Glossary: the terms in this page, spelled out

EOL / EOS (end of life / end of support)
the date a vendor stops selling, patching or supporting a product. Examples: Windows Server 2016 reaches end of support on January 12, 2027. A firewall past EOL stops getting security signatures.
NGFW (next-generation firewall)
a firewall that also inspects applications and threats, not just ports. Examples: An end-of-life firewall is replaced with an NGFW. NGFW subscriptions supply threat signatures.
Switch (network switch)
the device that connects wired devices (PCs, phones, access points, cameras) to the network. Examples: A PoE switch powers the access points and cameras. Core switches link the floors together.
Access point
the device on the ceiling or wall that provides Wi-Fi. Examples: Replacing 12 old access points with Wi-Fi 6E models. Each access point is placed using the Wi-Fi survey.
PoE (Power over Ethernet)
power and data delivered over one network cable. Examples: Wi-Fi access points, desk phones and IP cameras are often PoE powered. "We need a bigger PoE switch to run 40 cameras."
PoE budget (Power over Ethernet budget)
the total power a switch can deliver to connected devices. Examples: Adding cameras can exceed the PoE budget of an older switch. Wi-Fi 7 access points may need more power per port.
Wi-Fi 6 / 6E / 7
recent Wi-Fi generations. 6E and 7 add the 6 GHz band for more capacity. Examples: A crowded office upgrades to Wi-Fi 6E access points. Wi-Fi 7 needs switches and cabling that can feed it.
Wi-Fi survey
measuring and modeling wireless coverage before and after an install. BTI designs and validates Wi-Fi with Ekahau. Examples: A predictive survey from the floor plan places access points before move-in. A validation survey proves coverage after install.
Firmware
the software built into network devices, updated by the manufacturer to fix bugs and security issues. Examples: A firewall past end of support no longer gets firmware updates. Firmware is updated after hours.
SD-WAN (software-defined wide area network)
a way to link sites and manage several internet circuits as one, steering traffic to the best path. Examples: Branch offices connect to headquarters over SD-WAN. If one circuit fails, SD-WAN moves calls to the other.
VLAN (virtual local area network)
a way to split one physical network into separate logical networks. Examples: Guests, cameras and staff each get their own VLAN. "Put the phones on the voice VLAN."
VPN (virtual private network)
an encrypted connection across the internet between a user or site and your network. Examples: Two offices share files over a site-to-site VPN. A remote worker connects to the office through a VPN.
As-built
documentation of how a system was actually installed: diagrams, port maps, IP addresses, rack layouts and settings. Examples: The as-built network diagram shows every switch and VLAN. "Send the as-builts with the closeout package."

Frequently asked questions

When should a business upgrade its network?

When the firewall, switches or access points reach end of support, when Wi-Fi cannot keep up with the number of devices, when you add cameras, phones or access points that need more PoE power, or when you move or expand. Equipment past end of support no longer gets security fixes.

Is my SonicWall firewall end of life?

Check your exact model on SonicWall's product lifecycle tables. For example, SonicWall lists end of support on August 1, 2026 for the TZ 400, TZ 400W, TZ 600, TZ 600P and NSa 3650, and October 1, 2026 for the SOHO 250 and SOHO 250W. BTI can check your model and license status for you.

What should replace an end-of-life firewall?

Usually a current SonicWall model or a Cisco Meraki MX, sized to your internet speed, number of users and the security services you need. BTI moves your rules and VPNs over and tests failover before the old firewall is removed.

Will new Wi-Fi reduce the number of cables we need?

Often, yes. Newer Wi-Fi handles more devices at higher speeds, so fewer desks and devices need a wired drop. BTI designs coverage with Ekahau so you know where access points go before anything is mounted.

Do we have to replace everything at once?

No. Many businesses replace the firewall first, then switches and Wi-Fi as budget allows. BTI value engineers the plan at no charge so you keep what still has life in it.

Is this the same as a new network installation?

No. This page is for upgrading an existing network. For a new building or full cabling job, see BTI's network installation services.

How do you avoid disrupting work?

Equipment is configured and tested before it arrives, cutovers are scheduled with you, often after hours, and the old equipment stays ready until the new network is tested.

Can we finance a network upgrade?

Yes. BTI can arrange 3.99% vendor financing for 100% of the project, including equipment, labor and consulting, for qualified buyers, subject to credit approval.

Send us your firewall model and a rough count of switches and access points. An engineer will tell you what is end of life, what can stay and what an upgrade costs.
