Construction Site Security Systems and Job Site Cameras

Tools, copper wire, fuel, batteries and whole machines walk off job sites at night, and every incident costs more than the stolen item: downtime, insurance claims, schedule slips and replacement rentals. BTI designs, installs and monitors construction site security systems for job sites, equipment yards and laydown areas, and installs cameras and access control on TI and remodel projects as the GC's low-voltage subcontractor. Construction clients such as Giroux Glass, with locations in Los Angeles and Phoenix, rely on BTI for security systems and managed video.

What Are the Most Effective Construction Site Security Measures?

The layers that work together on most sites:

  1. Perimeter cameras with AI analytics that tell a person or vehicle from blowing debris and wildlife
  2. Live remote monitoring with talk-down so an operator can warn intruders before damage is done
  3. Gate access control and license plate recognition so only approved subs, deliveries and staff get in after hours
  4. Lighting, signage and fencing that make the cameras visible and the site harder to enter
  5. Equipment and tool storage controls such as secured conex boxes and yard zones with intrusion alarms
  6. Recorded evidence organized for police reports and insurance claims

Cameras for Yards, Offices and Long-Running Sites

BTI installs hardwired IP cameras where power and network exist, with wireless links back to your network where trenching doesn't make sense, and structured cabling run to the standard of any commercial building. Recording can be on site or off site so footage survives a stolen recorder, and cameras can be relocated as the work moves. → Structured cabling guide · Network installation

AI Video Analytics and 24/7 Remote Monitoring

Traditional motion alarms flood monitoring centers with false events. BTI tunes real-time AI video analytics to each site: people and vehicle detection by zone and schedule, line crossing at fences, loitering near equipment, and license plate recognition at the gate. Verified events go to live operators who can use talk-down audio and dispatch. BTI's SOC 2 audited NOC/SOC partner uses automation to triage alerts: 10,000+ alerts handled, zero missed. Thermal and radar options extend detection on large or dark perimeters.

Gate Access Control and LPR for Subs and Deliveries

Credentials and mobile access by trade and schedule, gate intercoms for deliveries, and license plate recognition that logs every vehicle in and out. When a sub's crew rolls off the job, their access ends the same day. BTI designs, sells, installs, supports and takes over existing Brivo accounts, so you can switch integrators without replacing hardware or re-enrolling users. → Access control solutions · Brivo access control

Equipment Yards and Laydown Areas

Yards hold the most expensive assets for the longest time. BTI combines perimeter analytics, intrusion zones, gate LPR and lighting triggers so the first person over the fence is seen, warned and recorded. → Preventing heavy equipment theft · Fleet and site security integration · Copper wire theft

Security Installs for Tenant Improvements and Remodels

On TI and remodel projects, BTI installs access control, security cameras and intercoms as the GC's low-voltage subcontractor:

  • Device schedules and low-voltage submittals from the drawings and specs
  • Rough-in and trim-out sequenced with the GC schedule and the other trades
  • Programming, testing, inspection and punch list
  • As-builts, credentials and tenant training at handover, with ongoing monitoring and support available to the tenant
Design fees are often waived when BTI handles procurement and installation. Example: a Southern California school district project where BTI delivered network and security infrastructure as the technology subcontractor to the GC. → Network installationNetwork designCommercial security camera systems

Converged With Your IT

Cameras and access panels are network devices. BTI segments them from office systems, manages firmware and passwords, and monitors them with the same team that watches your IT, so a camera never becomes the way into your accounting system. → Construction cybersecurity

AI That Watches Your Sites, Tuned to Your Rules

Contractors who get value from AI on the jobsite tune it to their own sites and rules. A Kiewit subsidiary reported that site-specific customization cut false positives by 99% in an 18-camera AI safety pilot (Kiewit newsroom; a third-party system, not a BTI project). BTI takes the same approach with the cameras you already own: we write custom video analytics for your gates, yards and work zones (after-hours presence, vehicles in restricted areas, PPE and exclusion zones where your safety team wants them) and connect alerts to the people and workflows that act on them. As your Guided Automation Partner, BTI governs that AI under a written policy aligned with the NIST AI Risk Management Framework, without stacking another per-camera AI subscription on top of your hardware. → AI for construction · Converged AI technology

Owned vs. Cloud-Managed Security Platforms: How to Choose

The biggest decision in a security system usually isn't the camera brand. It's whether you run an owned platform, hosted on premises or in a private cloud, or a cloud-managed platform that the vendor hosts and runs for you. BTI sells, installs and supports both: owned platforms such as Axis Camera Station, Milestone XProtect, exacqVision, Kantech EntraPass, RS2 Technologies and Software House C•CURE 9000, and cloud-managed options including YourSix and Brivo cloud video. We recommend the fit; we don't have a stake in the answer.

Cloud-managed platforms are a real convenience. You get a working solution out of the box, then customize it within the options the vendor provides. For a small office or a short-term location with no server room or IT staff, that can be the right call.

Owned platforms usually deliver more long-term value. You own the software and the data, and BTI can quickly customize the system: custom video analytics, integrations with access control, phones and work order systems, and AI on your terms. The trade-off is that an owned system has to be cybersecured and maintained, which is what co-management with BTI covers.

The IT objection, head on. Many IT teams ask for cloud-only security because past integrators did a poor job managing on-premises systems: unpatched servers, default passwords, no monitoring. That's a fair complaint about how those systems were managed, not about owning them. BTI co-manages owned platforms with your IT team, covering patching, hardening, monitoring and 24/7 support, with our SOC 2 audited NOC/SOC partner.

Which fits you?

  • Control: Owned, you control the software, upgrade timing and integrations. Cloud-managed, the vendor controls the feature set and upgrade schedule.
  • Customization: Owned, BTI can tailor analytics, workflows and integrations quickly, including custom analytics on Axis's open application platform (Axis ACAP). Cloud-managed, fast to start, with customization limited to what the vendor offers.
  • AI analytics licensing: Owned, many analytics run on the camera with minimal license fees; Axis preinstalls its AI-based object analytics on compatible cameras at no extra cost (Axis). Cloud-managed, AI features are usually tied to the vendor's subscription tiers and renewal pricing.
  • Data location: Owned, video stays on your premises or in your private cloud. Cloud-managed, video and metadata live in the vendor's cloud.
  • Cybersecurity responsibility: Owned, shared between your team and BTI under co-management. Cloud-managed, the vendor secures the platform, and you still secure user accounts, devices and the network.
  • Recurring cost: Owned, mostly upfront (100% financing is available) plus support. Cloud-managed, predictable per-camera or per-door subscriptions that continue for the life of the system.
  • Often the best fit for: Owned, multi-site contractors with yards, offices and long-running projects, or anyone who wants custom analytics and integrations. Cloud-managed, a small office or short-term location with no server room or IT staff.

Not sure? BTI will lay out both options with a multi-year cost comparison for your sites.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the most effective construction site security measures?

Layer perimeter cameras with AI analytics, live remote monitoring with talk-down, gate access control and license plate recognition, good lighting and fencing, secured equipment storage, and organized recorded evidence for police and insurers.

Do construction security cameras need Wi-Fi?

No. BTI prefers hardwired cameras on structured cabling, with wireless point-to-point links back to your network where cabling isn't practical, and recording on site or off site.

Can job site cameras move to the next project?

Yes. BTI plans deployments so cameras and access hardware can be pulled at closeout and redeployed, and keeps the monitoring account and video history organized by project.

Is remote video monitoring cheaper than a security guard?

For many sites it is, because one monitoring team watches many cameras around the clock and can talk down intruders in real time. Some high-risk sites use both. We price both options in your assessment.

Do you install access control and cameras as a subcontractor on TI projects?

Yes. BTI works as the GC's low-voltage subcontractor, with submittals, scheduled rough-in and trim-out, testing, inspection, as-builts and tenant handover. Design fees are often waived when BTI handles procurement and installation.

How do AI video analytics reduce false alarms on job sites?

BTI tunes analytics to each site, so the system alerts on people and vehicles in defined zones and times instead of every moving shadow. Verified events go to live operators, and the rules are adjusted as the site changes.

Should our security system be owned or cloud-managed?

It depends on your sites. Cloud-managed platforms are convenient and work out of the box, which suits a small office or short-term location with no server room or IT staff. Owned platforms, on premises or in a private cloud, give you control, your own data and fast customization, including AI analytics with minimal license fees. If the push for cloud-only comes from past integrators who didn't patch or monitor on-premises systems, BTI co-management (patching, hardening, monitoring and 24/7 support) addresses that. BTI sells and supports both and recommends the fit.
