Access Control for Warehouses and Distribution Centers

The short answer

BTI Communications Group, LTD. is a commercial security integrator with offices in Santa Fe Springs, Downers Grove and Phoenix, in business for over 40 years. We install access control for dock doors, yard gates, driver entrances, high-value cages and shift entries, on Brivo, Avigilon, Kantech, RS2 (Acre) or Axis, with video on every exception.

Requirements

What warehouse and DC operators need from access control

  • Truck drivers reach the driver lounge and shipping window, not the warehouse floor.
  • Dock and man doors are monitored so a propped door is noticed in minutes.
  • High-value cages, returns areas and pharmaceutical or electronics rooms are restricted by role.
  • Temporary and seasonal staff are badged quickly and lose access when the season ends.
  • Yard gates release the right carriers at the right times.
  • Shortage investigations can pull every badge and door event around a dock door and time.

Recommended setup

Recommended access control setup

Warehouse designs focus on the places product can leave: docks, man doors, cages and the yard.

Doors and zones

Employee entries, driver entrance and lounge, shipping and receiving offices, dock man doors, cages, yard gates.

Credentials

Cards or fobs for floor staff, mobile credentials for office and management, temporary badges for seasonal labor.

Readers

Rugged readers at man doors and pedestals at gates, intercom stations at the driver entrance.

Door hardware

Electrified locks and door position switches on man doors, with dock door status monitoring.

Visitor management

Driver and carrier check-in with ID capture, and visitor badges for auditors and vendors.

Video verification

Axis or Avigilon video, or Eagle Eye cloud video (part of Brivo), on docks, cages and gates linked to door events.

Integrations

Staffing agency and HR rosters, yard gate operators and alarm arming after the last shift.

Dock doors, man doors and propped door alerts

Most warehouse losses leave through a dock or a side door, a little at a time. BTI puts readers and door position switches on man doors beside the docks and monitors dock door status, so a door propped open or forced outside a shipping window alerts a supervisor and bookmarks the video.

Searchable door and badge history turns a shortage investigation from days of footage review into a short report: who opened which door, when, and what the camera saw.

Driver entrances, cages and seasonal staff

Drivers get their own entrance, lounge and shipping window, with an intercom and a door that only opens into that space. Inside, high-value cages, returns and controlled product rooms are limited to the roles that need them.

Seasonal and agency labor can be loaded in bulk with an end date, so access stops on its own when the peak season ends. That removes the most common gap BTI finds in warehouse systems: old badges that still work.

Yard gates and after-hours lockup

Yard gates run on the same system, with schedules for carrier appointments and override from the guard shack or shipping office. After the last shift, the building locks, the intrusion alarm arms on schedule and every after-hours entry requires a credential and appears in the log.

Compliance and audit support

Supply chain security programs

Distribution centers working with CTPAT or TAPA programs need evidence that access to cargo areas is controlled and recorded. BTI configures access control logs, door alarms and video retention that support those program reviews, and documents the controls so your security lead can show them to an auditor. Program membership and certification remain with your company.

How projects are scoped and quoted

Warehouse access control is scoped by counting man doors, dock doors to monitor, cages, gates and the cable distances across the building and yard. Platform licensing and camera integration complete the proposal, which BTI itemizes after a free survey.

Frequently asked questions

Who installs access control for warehouses and distribution centers?

BTI Communications Group, LTD. designs, installs and supports warehouse and distribution center access control from offices in Santa Fe Springs, Downers Grove and Phoenix, on Brivo, Avigilon Alta (formerly Openpath), Avigilon Unity, Kantech, RS2 (Acre) and Axis.

How do you keep truck drivers off the warehouse floor?

Drivers get a dedicated entrance, lounge and shipping window controlled by an intercom and a door that only opens into that space, so they never need a badge for the floor.

Can access control alert us when a dock door is left open?

Yes. Door position switches and dock door status monitoring send an alert when a door is propped or forced outside its schedule, with the related video bookmarked.

How do you handle seasonal and agency workers?

Temporary staff can be loaded in bulk with an end date so their badges stop working automatically when the season or assignment ends.

Does access control help with CTPAT or TAPA reviews?

It supports them. Door logs, alarms and video retention give your security lead evidence that cargo areas are controlled. Program membership and certification stay with your company.

What does warehouse access control cost?

It depends on man doors, dock doors to monitor, cages, yard gates, cable distances and platform licensing. BTI itemizes each line after a free site survey.
