Access Control for Manufacturing Facilities

The short answer

BTI Communications Group, LTD. is a commercial security integrator with offices in Santa Fe Springs, Downers Grove and Phoenix, in business for over 40 years. We install access control for production floors, restricted zones, shift entries, docks and gates, with the audit trail plant leaders need, on Kantech, RS2 (Acre), Avigilon, Brivo or Axis.

Requirements

What manufacturers need from access control

  • Production areas, labs and engineering spaces are restricted to trained and authorized staff.
  • Credentials follow shift schedules so people only enter during their own shift.
  • Contractors and vendors are badged to specific areas and dates.
  • Shipping and receiving docks, scrap areas and tool cribs show who entered and when.
  • Defense and export-controlled programs keep a clean record of who accessed controlled spaces.
  • Several plants can be managed on one platform with local administrators at each site.

Recommended setup

Recommended access control setup

Manufacturing designs follow the production flow, from the gate to the floor to the controlled rooms.

Doors and zones

Gates, shift entries, production floor, engineering and quality labs, controlled program areas, tool cribs, docks, OT rooms.

Credentials

Cards for floor staff, mobile credentials for office staff, and two-factor entry for controlled program rooms.

Readers

Rugged readers on the floor, keypad readers for two-factor rooms, and turnstile readers at shift entries.

Door hardware

Heavy duty electrified locks, turnstiles and interlocks where clean or controlled rooms need them.

Visitor management

Visitor and contractor check-in with safety and confidentiality acknowledgment.

Video verification

Axis or Avigilon video on docks, controlled rooms and gates tied to every badge event.

Integrations

HR rosters, training records for area authorization, and segmentation from OT networks.

Restricted production zones

Not every employee should walk into every area of a plant. BTI groups doors into zones such as the production floor, engineering and quality labs, controlled program rooms and OT rooms, and grants each role only the zones it needs. Rooms that hold controlled data or parts can require a card and PIN, and a door held open triggers an alert.

Access control is installed with three trades in mind: door and locking hardware, low-voltage power and wiring, and the IT and database work behind the platform. BTI does all three, which avoids the hand-off gaps that leave plant doors half working.

Shift schedules and contractor badges

Shift-based credentials open entries and turnstiles during an employee's shift and a short window around it. Contractors are badged to the areas and dates in their work order and expire automatically. When HR terminates an employee, the roster sync removes access on every door at every plant.

Docks, gates and tool cribs

Copper, tooling, spare parts and finished goods tend to leave a plant through docks, scrap areas and side doors. BTI controls and monitors those doors, links them to video and makes events searchable by door and time, so a shortage can be researched in minutes. Gates follow the same rules as doors, separating employees, visitors and carriers.

Compliance and audit support

Audit trails for CMMC, NIST 800-171 and ITAR programs

Manufacturers in the defense supply chain must show that physical access to controlled spaces is limited and recorded. BTI configures access control logs, visitor records and two-factor entry that support those CMMC, NIST 800-171 and ITAR program audits. CMMC and other compliance work is completed and contracted by BTI and its partners, including top industry professionals in each category.

Installation

What an installation includes

Plant projects are phased by building or line so production is not interrupted.

  1. Site surveyWalk the plant with operations, safety, quality and IT to map every zone.
  2. DesignZone and role matrix, door hardware per environment, and network segmentation plan.
  3. CablingRuns planned around lines, cranes and racking, scheduled into planned downtime.
  4. Door hardwareTurnstiles, electrified locks and interlocks installed and tested for egress.
  5. ProgrammingShift schedules, zone permissions, contractor rules and HR roster sync.
  6. TrainingTraining for HR, security, plant managers and local site administrators.
  7. SupportSystem health and alert monitoring, remote changes and on-site service when a door needs a technician.

How projects are scoped and quoted

Manufacturing access control is scoped per plant: zone count, doors and turnstiles, two-factor rooms, gates, cable routing around equipment and the platform. Multi-plant programs are quoted plant by plant on one platform. BTI itemizes each line after a free site survey.

Frequently asked questions

Who installs access control for manufacturing facilities?

BTI Communications Group, LTD. designs, installs and supports manufacturing access control from offices in Santa Fe Springs, Downers Grove and Phoenix, on Kantech, RS2 (Acre), Avigilon Unity, Brivo, Avigilon Alta (formerly Openpath) and Axis.

What is the best access control system for a manufacturing plant?

Plants that want to own their data and run several sites often choose Kantech, RS2 (Acre) or Avigilon Unity. Plants that want cloud administration choose Brivo or Avigilon Alta. BTI recommends a platform after mapping your zones and shifts.

Can access control follow our shift schedules?

Yes. Credentials can be tied to shift schedules so entries and turnstiles only open for employees during their own shift and a short window around it.

Does access control help with CMMC and NIST 800-171 audits?

It supports them by limiting and logging physical access to controlled spaces. CMMC and other compliance work is completed and contracted by BTI and its partners, including top industry professionals in each category.

Can you manage access control across several plants?

Yes. BTI puts multiple plants on one platform with local administrators at each site and corporate visibility across all of them.

How much does manufacturing access control cost?

Cost depends on zones, doors, turnstiles, gates, two-factor rooms, cabling around equipment and platform licensing. BTI provides an itemized proposal after a free site survey.
