IT infrastructure services for Chicagoland offices, plants and warehouses

Infrastructure is everything your applications run on: internet circuits, firewalls, switches, wireless, structured cabling, servers, storage, virtualization and the cloud connections that tie it all together. In Chicago, that infrastructure often spans a downtown or suburban headquarters, production or distribution buildings along the tollway system, and branch sites across Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. When it is designed piecemeal, every site becomes a special case and every outage takes longer to diagnose.

BTI plans, builds and supports IT infrastructure for Chicagoland organizations from our office at 1441 Branding Ave., Ste 200 in Downers Grove. Our engineers handle assessment and design, installation and cabling, and ongoing management. That means the people who design your network also stand behind it. Call 312-432-5300 to talk with an engineer.

Infrastructure services we deliver in Chicago

Assessment and roadmap

We inventory circuits, firewalls, switching, wireless, servers, storage and cloud services, identify end-of-life equipment and single points of failure, and deliver a prioritized roadmap with budget ranges for your environment.

Network design

We handle site and campus network architecture, VLAN and segmentation design, wireless surveys and multi-site WAN design. See network design services in Chicago.

Cabling and installation

Structured cabling, network closet build-outs, equipment racking and labeling for new spaces and renovations. See network installation in Chicago.

WAN and SD-WAN

Carrier diversity, SD-WAN deployment and failover design so a single circuit cut does not take a site offline. See SD-WAN services in Chicago.

Servers, storage and virtualization

Right-sizing on-premises hosts, refreshing storage, planning virtualization changes and moving workloads to the cloud when it makes sense.

Hybrid cloud

Azure and Microsoft 365 integration, identity, secure connectivity between sites and cloud, and backup for both.

Common infrastructure challenges we see in Chicago

Older buildings and mixed-age equipment

Chicago’s building stock ranges from century-old loft offices in the West Loop and River North to 1980s suburban office parks and newer industrial buildings. Older spaces often have undocumented cabling, small or poorly ventilated closets and a mix of equipment from different eras. We document what exists, clean up what can be reused and replace what cannot, then label everything so the next change is easier.

Warehouses and production floors

Large metal buildings, high racking and moving equipment make wireless coverage difficult. Scanner and mobile-device Wi-Fi needs predictive and on-site surveys, the right access-point placement and roaming tuned for devices on the move. Production networks should also be segmented from office networks to limit the blast radius of any incident.

Multi-site sprawl

Organizations that grew by acquisition often have a different firewall brand, internet provider and IP scheme at every location. We standardize designs and consolidate management so policies are consistent and changes can be made centrally.

Weather and resilience

Winter storms and summer thunderstorms both cause power and carrier outages. Infrastructure design should include UPS sizing, generator integration where available, diverse internet paths and cloud-hosted services that stay reachable when a building is not.

Our infrastructure project process

  1. Discovery. Interviews with leadership and IT staff, site walks and a technical inventory.
  2. Design. Architecture drawings, bill of materials, implementation plan and risk notes, reviewed with your team before anything is ordered.
  3. Procurement. We source equipment and coordinate carrier orders, with lead times flagged early so they do not derail move-in or cutover dates.
  4. Implementation. Staged installation, configuration and testing, scheduled around production shifts and business hours where needed.
  5. Documentation and handoff. As-built diagrams, configurations, IP plans and credentials delivered to you.
  6. Ongoing management (optional). Monitoring, patching and change management under managed IT in Chicago or the managed infrastructure service.
Plan your next infrastructure project

Moving offices or opening a new site in Chicagoland

Office moves and new facilities are where infrastructure planning matters most. Carrier circuits can take weeks or months to install, landlords control access to risers and telecom rooms, and furniture, security and AV vendors all need cabling at the same time. When IT is brought in late, move-in dates slip or staff arrive to temporary connections.

We recommend involving us as soon as a lease is signed, or earlier during site selection. We then:

  • Review the space for telecom room location, power, cooling and cable pathways.
  • Order primary and backup circuits early and track carrier milestones.
  • Design the cabling, network and wireless layout and coordinate with other trades.
  • Pre-stage and configure equipment so cutover is fast.
  • Plan the move weekend, including testing every desk, printer and wireless area before staff arrive.

Signs your infrastructure needs attention

  • Firewalls, switches or servers are past the manufacturer’s end of support and no longer receive security updates.
  • Network closets are full of unlabeled cables, and nobody is sure what can be unplugged.
  • Wi-Fi drops in certain areas of the warehouse or office, and staff have learned to work around it.
  • A single internet circuit takes a site offline when it fails.
  • Each site was built by a different vendor, with different equipment and no common standard.
  • Cloud services feel slow because traffic is routed inefficiently through headquarters.

Security built into the infrastructure

Good infrastructure design is the foundation of security: segmented networks, hardened firewall policies, secure remote access, logging and patchable, supported equipment. We design with those controls in place from the start and work with high-security enterprise partners for monitoring and response. For broader programs such as assessments, vCISO and governance, see our national cybersecurity services.

BTI has been in business for 40 years, operates under an ISO 27001 compliant information security program, and holds GSA contract vehicles for public-sector and education buyers.

Infrastructure for regulated Illinois organizations

Healthcare providers, financial firms, manufacturers serving defense programs and public-sector agencies all have infrastructure requirements that go beyond keeping the lights on. They include segmentation of systems that handle protected data, logging and retention, documented change control, and evidence that controls are working. Organizations that use biometric devices, such as time clocks or access readers, also need to consider Illinois BIPA when designing where that data is stored and who can reach it. We build those requirements into designs and documentation from the start and coordinate with your compliance advisers. See IT compliance services and healthcare IT in Chicago.

Infrastructure ready for AI workloads

AI adoption puts new demands on infrastructure: more bandwidth to cloud services, cleaner identity and data permissions, and sometimes local compute for specific workloads. We help Chicago organizations assess whether their network, identity and data foundations are ready before investing in AI tools. Learn about our AI services and solutions. A readiness review typically looks at internet capacity at each site, how traffic reaches cloud AI services, whether identity and access controls are tight enough, and where sensitive data lives, so that AI tools do not surface information to the wrong people.
