Milestone XProtect Video Management in Chicago and the Suburbs

BTI is a Milestone Advanced Partner serving Chicago and suburban Cook and DuPage out to Lake, Kane, Will and McHenry. Our engineers in Downers Grove plan, license, install and maintain XProtect for warehouses, manufacturers, healthcare groups and public buildings.

  • XProtect system takeovers
  • Multi-building and multi-site recording
  • Axis camera and BriefCam integration

Milestone services from Downers Grove

Chicago-area video systems range from a dozen cameras in a River North office to hundreds across a distribution campus in Joliet. Our process scales with them.

Coverage design

Each camera view is planned for its job, whether that is reading a plate at a dock gate or identifying faces at a lobby desk, with low light and winter glare considered up front.

Licensing and Milestone Care

We quote base and device licenses together with Milestone Care coverage, and track renewal dates so support and upgrade rights do not lapse.

Network closet cabling installed for cameras in Chicagoland

Servers and storage

Recording servers and Husky appliances are sized for camera count, bitrate and retention, with failover recording for sites that cannot afford to lose footage.

Integrations

Axis cameras, intercoms and network speakers tie into XProtect, along with BriefCam analytics and alarm inputs from access control and intrusion panels.

Roles and remote access

Plant managers, HR and security staff each get their own Smart Client views and permissions, and the XProtect Web Client and Mobile app give secure access from off site.

Taking over an existing XProtect system in Chicagoland

Company moves, acquisitions and integrator exits leave plenty of Chicago-area businesses running XProtect with nobody maintaining it. BTI can take over the system as it stands. We collect the license and admin details, check every recording server and camera, and bring the software to a supported version on a schedule you approve.

  • License, Milestone Care and admin account review
  • Upgrades planned around shifts and production schedules
  • Disk health and retention verified on each recording server
  • Exterior camera checks ahead of winter, including heaters and housings
  • 24/7 system health and alert monitoring available, plus a 24/7 converged security NOC/SOC

XProtect in 2026: what changed for Chicagoland

Milestone has released three XProtect versions since fall 2025. These are the updates our Downers Grove team uses most on Chicago-area systems.

New in 2026 R2

Milestone's October 2026 update adds Sticky Notes, refreshed Server Logs and Permission Inheritance. Care Plus customers also get Remote Manager monitoring.

New in 2026 R1

Door alarms now take a reason and a note that sync to the access control system, and Device Pack 14.1 supports over 16,300 devices.

Access control on the map

Doors, readers, turnstiles and gates could be added to the Smart Map starting with 2025 R2, letting a Chicago security desk handle door alarms next to live video.

Arcules hybrid cloud

Chicago sites on Professional+, Expert or Corporate can add Arcules for direct camera recording to the cloud, extended cloud retention and backup for edge gateways.

Secure evidence links

Evidence Manager shares video outside your organization through a protected link, with nothing to install and no viewer license, using on site, cloud or hybrid storage.

Hafnia video summaries

Milestone's vision language model, Hafnia, powers a Smart Client plug-in that summarizes what happened in a recording.

XProtect features in short

Current capabilities Chicagoland teams ask about:

  • Four editions: Express+, Professional+, Expert and Corporate
  • Federated Architecture on Corporate for multi-site estates
  • Remote Manager health monitoring and scheduled reports
  • Access control alarms with reasons and notes
  • Hybrid cloud recording and backup with Arcules
  • Secure-link evidence sharing with Evidence Manager

XProtect integrations for Chicago-area buildings

Chicagoland control rooms rarely run cameras alone. Our Downers Grove engineers connect XProtect to the systems below.

Step by step: an XProtect project in Chicagoland

From a single Loop office to warehouses along I-55, XProtect projects in the Chicago area follow this sequence.

  1. Walk the buildings. Mark each view's job and note winter glare, dock lighting and pole locations
  2. Fix retention. Settle on the days of video your policy or insurer needs
  3. Design recording. Size servers or Husky appliances, with failover where losing video is not acceptable
  4. Pick the edition. Choose among Express+, Professional+, Expert and Corporate
  5. Install before winter. Exterior cameras go up and get tested ahead of the cold
  6. Ongoing care. Milestone Care renewals and recorder health are tracked from Downers Grove

XProtect editions compared for Chicago organizations

Here is how the current XProtect editions line up for Chicago-area buyers. Licensing figures come in a written proposal, not on this page.

XProtect editionCommon Chicagoland useKey difference
Express+One office, store or small plantLimited to one recording server
Professional+Several suburban buildings under one teamMany recording servers, managed centrally
ExpertPlants and distribution centers that need uptimeFailover recording servers
CorporateHospitals, universities and city scale estatesFull Federated Architecture and control room tools at the largest scale

The older entry level edition has been retired by Milestone, so new Chicago systems start at Express+.

Illinois rules to know before adding cameras

Illinois has stricter privacy laws than most states. We flag these early; your counsel makes the final decision.

Audio recording

Illinois' eavesdropping statute (720 ILCS 5/14) makes recording a private conversation without everyone's consent unlawful in most cases, so camera audio is left disabled unless counsel approves.

Biometrics

The Illinois Biometric Information Privacy Act (740 ILCS 14) sets notice and consent rules for face templates, so we discuss any face analytics with counsel first.

Codes and permits

Chicago uses its own building code while suburbs adopt the IBC with amendments, so cable paths and roof work follow each AHJ.

Security Systems by Industry

Video, access control and alarm systems designed around the risks and rules of your industry.

XProtect questions from Chicago-area clients

Our Milestone integrator is gone. Can BTI help?

Yes. Share your software license code and any admin credentials you have. We review the system remotely or on site, then propose a support plan before changing anything.

Can one XProtect system cover several buildings?

Yes. A single management server can run recording servers at multiple buildings, and XProtect Corporate adds Federated Architecture for sites that need to stay independent.

Will our existing Axis cameras work with XProtect?

In most cases. Axis is among the most widely supported brands in XProtect, and we confirm firmware and device pack compatibility before reusing any camera.

Can XProtect show alarms from our doors and intrusion panels?

Yes. Access control and intrusion events can be brought into XProtect so operators see the alarm and the related camera view together.

Do you cover the suburbs and Northwest Indiana?

Yes. Besides the city, we work across the collar counties, DeKalb, Kendall and Grundy counties, Lake and Porter counties in Indiana, and Kenosha County in Wisconsin.

Can Illinois public agencies buy XProtect through BTI?

Where the scope qualifies, GSA contract 47QTCA21D00BA can be used. If not, we respond through your agency's normal bid or purchasing process.

What support comes after go-live?

Scheduled maintenance runs through Downers Grove, our support line takes urgent calls around the clock, and optional monitoring warns us when a recording server or camera stops reporting.

Which XProtect edition fits a Chicago company?

One building usually fits Express+. Several buildings fit Professional+. Plants that need failover recording choose Expert, and campuses that need federation choose Corporate. We confirm after the survey.

Can we use face analytics with XProtect in Illinois?

Possibly, but Illinois BIPA sets strict notice and consent rules for biometric data, so we review any face analytics plan with your counsel before enabling it.

Can security staff control doors from XProtect?

Yes. Connect C-CURE 9000 or Brivo through XProtect Access, and doors appear on the Smart Map, door alarms open with video, and notes typed by operators flow back to the access system.

What happened to the free XProtect edition?

Milestone retired it with XProtect 2025 R2. Chicago-area systems still on the free version can step up to Express+ or Professional+, and we plan the move around your existing cameras.

Can XProtect send recordings to the cloud?

Yes, in a hybrid design. Arcules adds off-site cloud storage and backup for Professional+, Expert and Corporate systems, and recording continues on your local servers.

How do we share a clip with someone outside the company?

Use XProtect Evidence Manager. It shares video through a secure link, so a lawyer or insurer can watch it without software or a viewer license.
