When an IT assessment makes sense
- A new CEO, CFO or COO wants an independent view of technology before setting budgets.
- You are planning a cloud or Microsoft 365 move, a network refresh or a new site.
- A cyber insurance application, customer questionnaire or audit is asking questions you can't answer yet.
- Support feels reactive, and you want to know whether the issue is people, process or equipment.
- IT, SaaS and outsourced service costs keep rising, and you want to know where the money goes.
- You are considering managed or co-managed IT and want a baseline first.
- You are acquiring a company. For deal work, see Technology Due Diligence.
What the assessment can cover
Start with the area that is costing you the most today, and add others later. Which areas your assessment covers, and how deep it goes, is agreed with a BTI engineer on the first consult call.
Infrastructure
Servers, storage, switching, firewalls, Wi-Fi coverage and capacity, cabling and equipment age.
Cloud and Microsoft 365
Tenant configuration, identity and access with Microsoft Entra, device management with Intune, licensing fit.
Security posture
Endpoint protection, patching, backups, email security and phishing exposure, multifactor authentication, admin access, and alignment with the NIST Cybersecurity Framework.
Backup and recovery
What is backed up, where, how often it is tested, and how long recovery would take on paper.
Communications
Phone system, contact center, carrier circuits and how voice depends on the network.
Support and operations
Ticket patterns, documentation, vendor contracts, asset lifecycle and who owns what.
Cost and resource optimization
IT budget and spend, staff and resource allocation, outsourced and managed service agreements, SaaS subscriptions and license overlap.
Physical and site systems (optional)
Cameras, access control and how they connect to the IT network.
Phishing is a common finding. See email security awareness training for how BTI trains staff to spot it.
What you can receive
Deliverables match the agreed scope. They typically include:
An executive summary
For leadership: the top risks, the top opportunities and what to fix first.
A technical findings report
For IT, with evidence for each finding.
A prioritized action plan
Grouped by urgency and effort, with suggested owners, so you can start with quick wins.
Cost-saving opportunities
Unused licenses, overlapping SaaS tools, agreements worth renegotiating and work that could be automated. Results depend on your environment; BTI doesn't promise a specific savings amount.
A lifecycle and refresh outlook
That a vCIO can turn into a budget. See vCIO & IT Budgets.
A readout meeting
With your team, to walk through findings, answer questions and agree on next steps.
The first consultation and the initial assessment conversation are free. BTI sets the scope with you based on your sites, users and the decision the assessment needs to support.
How it works
Engineering consult call
A BTI engineer talks through your sites, users, systems and the decision ahead, and sets the scope with you.
Discovery
Interviews with leadership and IT, document review, and read-only data collection with your approval. BTI staff visit sites in Los Angeles and Southern California, Chicagoland and Phoenix where needed; elsewhere, discovery is remote or coordinated through partners.
Analysis and report
Findings are rated and mapped to business impact, with the quick wins called out first.
Readout and next steps
You decide what happens next. BTI can deliver the work, guide your team, or hand the plan to another provider.
IT assessment vs. cybersecurity assessment

|---|---|---|
| Question it answers | Is our technology fit for where the business is going? | How exposed are we to attack right now? |
| Scope | Infrastructure, cloud, security posture, communications, support, lifecycle | External and internal security testing and findings |
| Best for | Planning, budgeting, cost reduction, change of leadership, before managed IT | Security baseline, insurance and customer questionnaires |

Many organizations do both. For a deeper security program review, a vCISO can run a NIST CSF maturity assessment. See vCISO & Cybersecurity Consulting.

Frequently asked questions
What are IT assessment services?
A structured review of your technology environment: infrastructure, cloud, security posture, communications and support. The areas covered, and the findings and plan you receive, match the scope set on the initial engineering consult call.
How long does an IT assessment take?
It depends on the number of sites, users and systems and on the scope. BTI talks through what to expect on the first consult call rather than quoting a fixed timeline up front.
Will the assessment disrupt our staff?
Discovery is read-only and scheduled with your team. Interviews are short and planned in advance.
Do we have to use BTI for the fixes?
No. The plan is yours. BTI can deliver it, work alongside your IT team, or support another provider.
How is this different from a network assessment?
A network assessment focuses on the network. An IT assessment also covers cloud, security posture, backups, communications, support and lifecycle planning.
Is there a cost?
There is no cost for the first consultation or the initial IT assessment conversation, and the scope is set on that engineering consult call. The cybersecurity assessment is also free. If you choose to go ahead with projects or services afterward, BTI quotes them itemized before any work starts.
Can the assessment find cost savings?
It often does. BTI reviews your IT budget, staff and resource use, outsourced and managed service agreements, and SaaS subscriptions, and lists the savings opportunities it finds. The amount depends on your environment, so BTI doesn't promise a figure.
