HIPAA Compliance IT and Healthcare Cybersecurity

Healthcare is a constant target for ransomware and data theft, and the HIPAA Security Rule expects you to prove your safeguards work. BTI helps medical groups, PACE programs, behavioral health and substance use disorder programs, pharmacies and dental groups (plus clinics and hospital outpatient sites) run a documented, monitored security program. It covers risk analysis, 24/7 detection and response, policies, training, and evidence ready for audits and investigations.

This page is part of BTI's connected technology solutions and advisory services for healthcare. With cybersecurity, IT, security systems, communications and AI under one partner, your compliance evidence comes from one place instead of five vendors.

What HIPAA Compliance Means for Your IT

The HIPAA Security Rule (45 CFR Part 164, Subpart C) requires covered entities and business associates to protect electronic protected health information (ePHI) with administrative, physical and technical safeguards. In practice, that means:

  • A current, documented risk analysis and a plan to manage the risks it finds
  • Access controls: unique user IDs, MFA, role-based access, prompt de-provisioning
  • Audit controls: logging and review of activity on systems that hold ePHI
  • Integrity and transmission security: encryption in transit and at rest
  • Contingency planning: tested backups, disaster recovery, emergency mode operations
  • Security awareness training and incident response procedures
  • Physical safeguards for workstations, server rooms and devices

There is no official government "HIPAA certification." Compliance is your organization's determination. BTI provides the controls, monitoring and documentation that support it.

Beyond HIPAA: Requirements by Healthcare Segment

42 CFR Part 2 for Substance Use Disorder Programs

Federally assisted SUD treatment programs must protect patient records under 42 CFR Part 2, which sets stricter consent and disclosure rules than HIPAA and requires formal policies and procedures to protect records. BTI supports Part 2 programs with role-based access, segmented storage, audit logging and documented security policies. Your compliance team or counsel determines how Part 2 applies.

Pharmacies: DEA Controlled Substance Security

DEA registrants must maintain effective controls against theft and diversion of controlled substances (21 CFR 1301.71–1301.76). BTI provides access control with audit trails for medication storage, video coverage and alarm systems that support those controls, alongside HIPAA-aligned IT security for pharmacy systems.

PACE Organizations

PACE programs (regulated under 42 CFR Part 460) handle PHI across day centers, clinics, transportation and home care. BTI secures every site and connection under one HIPAA-aligned program with consistent identity, device and network controls.

Dental Groups

Dental practices are HIPAA covered entities when they bill electronically. BTI brings the same risk analysis, endpoint protection, backups and policies to multi-location dental groups, sized for practice operations.

HIPAA Compliance IT Checklist

  1. Complete or refresh your Security Rule risk analysis. (HHS/ONC Security Risk Assessment Tool)
  2. Inventory every system, device and cloud service that stores or sends ePHI.
  3. Enforce MFA and least-privilege access. Remove departed users the same day.
  4. Turn on and review audit logs for EHR, email, file shares and remote access.
  5. Encrypt laptops, mobile devices, backups and email containing PHI.
  6. Run 3-2-1 backups, with an immutable copy, and test restores.
  7. Monitor endpoints and the network 24/7 with a SOC.
  8. Train staff on phishing, and test them.
  9. Write and rehearse an incident response and breach-notification plan.
  10. Keep business associate agreements with vendors who handle PHI.
  11. Segment medical devices, cameras and guest Wi-Fi from clinical systems.
  12. Review it all at least annually and when systems change.

For implementation detail, NIST SP 800-66 Rev. 2 maps the Security Rule to practical controls. HHS's 405(d) program publishes Health Industry Cybersecurity Practices.

24/7 Managed Detection and Response

BTI's 24/7 NOC/SOC partner backed by a SOC 2 audited operations center monitors endpoints, email, identity and network around the clock. Automation triages the noise and analysts act on real threats: 10,000+ alerts handled, zero missed.

Policies, Procedures and Audit Evidence

Written security policies, risk management plans, training records and control evidence kept ready for auditors, payers and investigators. Our clients pass 94% of audits on the first attempt. → Governance, risk & compliance · IT compliance

Network Security and Medical Device Segmentation

Firewalls, segmentation and secure remote access that separate clinical systems, medical/IoT devices, cameras and guest Wi-Fi. → Network security · IoT security

Ransomware Readiness and Recovery

Immutable backups, tested restores and an incident response plan, so a ransomware event doesn't stop patient care. Guidance aligns with CISA #StopRansomware.

Business Associate Agreements

Vendors that handle PHI on your behalf are business associates under HIPAA. BTI signs HIPAA business associate agreements (BAAs) when needed.

Cybersecurity That Connects to Your Physical Security

Badge readers, cameras and clinical workstations share the network with your EHR. Because BTI also designs your healthcare security systems, physical access logs and video retention sit inside the same HIPAA program. That covers the physical safeguards many IT-only providers leave out. → Converged security

Governed AI Without Exposing PHI

Your staff see AI chat tools. They don't see the AI virtual workforce that can watch your network, triage alerts and keep systems patched. BTI is your Guided Automation Partner, closing that gap so automation reliably keeps you running and secure.

  • Keep PHI out of public AI tools. BTI sets up secure, organization-controlled AI workspaces with access controls, retention rules and audit logging, plus a written AI use policy.
  • Put AI in your risk analysis. AI tools that touch ePHI are information systems under the Security Rule. We document how approved tools handle data, using the NIST AI Risk Management Framework as a reference.
  • AI-assisted defense. Automation in BTI's NOC/SOC correlates alerts across endpoints, identity and email faster than manual review.

Guided Automation advisory services are included in all BTI managed IT plans at no extra cost. AI tools such as secure chat workspaces, model access and secure cloud workspaces are optional add-ons. → Healthcare AI · AI security, governance & risk

Frequently Asked Questions

What does HIPAA require for IT?

The Security Rule requires administrative, physical and technical safeguards for ePHI: a documented risk analysis, access and audit controls, encryption, contingency planning, training and incident response.

Does 42 CFR Part 2 apply to our behavioral health program?

Part 2 applies to federally assisted substance use disorder programs and adds stricter confidentiality rules than HIPAA. Ask your counsel to confirm. BTI provides the access controls, logging and policies that support it.

Do pharmacies have physical security requirements?

DEA registrants must keep effective controls against theft and diversion of controlled substances (21 CFR 1301.71–1301.76). Access control, video and alarms support those controls.

Does BTI sign a business associate agreement (BAA)?

Yes. BTI signs HIPAA business associate agreements (BAAs) when needed.

Is there a HIPAA certification?

No. There is no official government HIPAA certification. Compliance is your organization's determination, supported by documented controls and evidence. BTI provides HIPAA-aligned safeguards and documentation.

How often should we do a HIPAA risk analysis?

Regularly, and whenever your environment changes significantly (new EHR, new location, new cloud service). Many organizations review it annually.

What's the difference between HIPAA compliance and cybersecurity?

Compliance is documented proof that the required safeguards exist. Cybersecurity is the day-to-day work of keeping attackers out. You need both, and BTI delivers both together.

Can our staff use AI tools with patient data?

Only governed tools that are covered in your risk analysis. BTI sets up secure, organization-controlled AI workspaces and an AI use policy so PHI stays out of public AI tools.

Do you cover physical safeguards?

Yes. BTI also designs access control and video for healthcare facilities, so physical safeguards and logs sit in the same program.

How is pricing structured?

You get itemized monthly pricing, and 100% financing covers hardware, licensing and labor.
