How to Switch Security System Support Without Starting Over
Your cameras still record and your badge readers still open doors. But the dealer who installed them stopped returning calls, the support agreement lapsed a while ago, or the company behind the system is gone. Systems like these are often called orphaned systems. They tend to keep running quietly until the day a server fails, a firmware flaw goes public, or an auditor asks for footage nobody can pull.
The good news is that changing integrators rarely means replacing the system. For 40 years, BTI Communications Group has taken over support of existing camera, access control and alarm systems. We keep what works, fix what doesn’t, and modernize in phases. Here is how a takeover works and what to expect.
Signs It’s Time to Switch Security System Support
Most organizations don’t plan to switch providers. They end up there after small frustrations pile up. Common warning signs include:- Slow or no response. Service tickets sit for days, or the only contact is a voicemail box.
- An expired or vague support agreement. Nobody can say what’s covered, who patches the servers, or when anyone last checked them.
- No documentation. No current device list, network diagram or record of admin credentials.
- Locked-in credentials and licenses. The old dealer holds the admin passwords, software licenses or cloud accounts.
- Outdated firmware and operating systems. VMS and access control servers have gone months or years without updates.
- Problems found after the fact. Your team learns a camera is offline only when someone needs its footage.
What a Security System Takeover Involves
A structured takeover moves your system from “it probably works” to “we know exactly what we have.” At BTI, it covers four areas.1. Audit and inventory
We list every camera, reader, controller, panel, recorder and server, along with its model, location, firmware version and condition. This shows what’s healthy, what’s failing and what’s near end of life. It also shows how the system connects to your network.2. Credentials and licensing handover
We help you get back control of administrator accounts, software licenses, cloud portals and support entitlements. Where possible, we work with the previous provider or the manufacturer to transfer them. The goal is simple: your organization owns its system, and access is documented and controlled.3. Firmware and patch baseline
We record current firmware and software versions, compare them with manufacturer releases, and build a prioritized plan to bring devices and servers up to date. Updates are scheduled to protect recording and door operations. We also track published vulnerabilities, such as the CISA cybersecurity advisories, that affect cameras, recorders and access control servers.4. Documentation
You receive clear records: device inventory, network and IP details, configuration notes and credential custody. Whoever supports the system later, including your own IT team, starts from a known baseline, so you never have to switch security system support blind again.Keep What Works, Upgrade in Phases
Many integrators answer a takeover request with a rip-and-replace proposal. We don’t start there. Much of an existing system often still has useful life left, and replacing working equipment spends capital that could go to real risks. BTI uses incremental modernization instead. We stabilize the current system first. Then we replace or upgrade components in phases, based on risk, failure rate and budget. A failing recorder or an unsupported access control server might be addressed right away, while dependable cameras stay in service for years. Financing is available for larger phases. We support many of the platforms commercial facilities already run, including Axis, Avigilon/Motorola, Bosch, Brivo, Software House, Kantech, Milestone, ExacqVision and Cisco Meraki MV. Because we handle system integration, we can also connect video, access control and alarms so they work together, and add custom security AI workflows when they solve a real operational problem. Security cameras and access control servers are networked computers, and they carry the same cyber risks as any other endpoint. That’s why BTI treats physical security and cybersecurity as one discipline: converged security. Our GlobalView support for physical security systems covers VMS and access control servers with:- ConnectWise Asio RMM for secure remote access, patching and proactive alerting, so issues are often caught before users notice them
- Nightly offsite configuration backups, so a failed server can be restored instead of rebuilt from scratch
- SentinelOne endpoint protection backed by a 24/7 security operations center
- Remote and onsite service from BTI engineers
Security System Takeover Checklist
Before or during a switch, gather or confirm the following:- Copies of any current or expired support agreements and warranties
- A list of known sites, buildings and system types (video, access control, intrusion)
- Any existing device lists, drawings or network diagrams
- Administrator credentials for VMS, access control, panels and cloud portals, or a list of who holds them
- Software license keys and manufacturer account details
- Server locations, operating system versions and backup status
- Known problem areas: offline cameras, failing readers, false alarms
- Compliance or retention requirements for footage and access logs
- Internal contacts in facilities, IT and security who need to be involved
- Budget timing for phased upgrades
