Large Scale Phishing Campaign Bypasses MFA
Microsoft has uncovered a large phishing scam that can steal credentials even if MFA is enabled. The campaign has been active since September 2021 and has attempted to compromise at least 10,000 businesses worldwide. The scam depends on the use of adversary in the middle (AiTM) phishing sites to hijack cookies and steal credentials. From them, hackers gain access to the victim’s mailbox and then launch attacks against other targets.
How do they attack?
In the attack observed by Microsoft, hackers initiate contact with potential victims through email by attaching an HTML file claiming the recipient has a voicemail message and needs to click the attachment or it will be deleted in 24 hours. If a user clicks the link, he is redirected to a site that informs users that they will be redirected to their mailbox in an hour. In the meantime, users are asked to sign their credentials.
What’s new about this?
Attackers use a clever code to fill the landing page with the users email address, making them believe they are on a legitimate website. If the victim enters his credentials, he gets redirected to the original site meanwhile the attacker has full control of your account without anyone noticing. This new scam is mostly used to commit payment fraud.
