Medibank Refuses To Pay Ransom After 9.7 Million Customers Are Exposed In Ransomware Attack

The Australian health insurer confirmed that personal data belonging to 9.7 million of its current and former clients were compromised following a ransomware incident.

According to Medibank, the attack was detected on its IT network on October 12th, in a manner said to be “consistent with the persecutors to a ransomware event,” prompting to isolate systems, but not before the attackers exfiltrated the data.

The attack compromised 5.1 million Medibank customers, 2.8 million AHM costumers, and around 1.8 million international customers. Compromised data includes dates of birth, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, Medicare numbers for AHM customers, passport numbers, and visa details for international student customers.

On November 7th, Medibank said that the threat actor behind the security incident released the compromised files on the dark web after the company’s refusal to pay the ransom.

While the Australian company hasn’t pointed fingers at a specific criminal group, the data was posted on a dark web portal linked to REvil, which launched operations this May.
